Competa is a traditional ‘white village’ situated in Axarquia, north east of Malaga and less than 1 hour drive from Malaga airport. The village is spectacularly located about 600 metres above sea level in the Sierra de Almijara, the often snow capped range of mountains rising to over 2000m, separating Malaga from Granada. The whole area is protected as a natural park and one can often see wild goats and eagles as well as a wide variety of plant species.
The area is reputed to have one of the best climates in Europe, with more than 300 sunny days a year and pleasant temperatures which rarely drop below freezing even in January or February. The local agriculture reflects this and on the drive from the coast you can see carob trees, avocados and mangoes as well as the ubiquitous lemons and oranges, almonds, olives and grapes
The village has a slightly bohemian feel but manages to maintain its traditional Andalusian culture while playing host to a wide variety of nationalities in the form of residents and tourists. It is famous for its wine, based on the moscatel grape and a visit to the vineyard/ bodega is a must. The famous annual fiesta of Noche del Vino (night of the wine) takes place on 15th August and provides an excuse for a 48 hour party! It is also famous for producing raisins. The local olive oil and honey is also of good quality. The local people are very hospitable and friendly.
Competa is well served with more than 10 restaurants and bars serving a variety of food from full a la carte menus to more informal tapas. Eating out is often a relatively inexpensive activity and enjoying good food outside on a balmy night one of life’s pleasures.
The town has a market on Saturday and there are many small shops selling local produce and handicrafts
For a beach you can drive to the coast at Nerja in 30 minutes.
Further afield, Malaga is less than 1 hour away, Granada less than 2 hours and Cordoba and Seville also easily reachable.
